One-Day Visiting Artist Workshop: Kurinuki

Taught by Brooklin Grantz

Dates: September 27th, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM (lunch break from 12:00 PM – 12:30 PM)

In this one-day workshop, students will make utilitarian and sculptural
objects with the Japanese carving technique Kurinuki. We will discuss how
different clay bodies can influence a carved surface, as well as wedging in
aggregates to influence gestures and landscapes. Students will learn to
work intuitively, responding to the terrain of their object as they remove
clay. Technical discussions include:
- clay weight and thickness
- building up surface before you begin carving
- adding aggregates to your clay
- stages of drying, pre- and post-carving
- exploring slip, stain, and glaze applications
- tips for maintaining and reclaiming your trimmings
