Schedule: Saturdays 10am-12:30pm 

Dates: October 24th - December 19th *no class on 11/28 (8 weeks)

Experience: All skill levels, beginner-friendly 

Age: 13-17 

Supervised Open Studio Hours: Mondays & Thursdays 3-5pm 

Get your hands on the wheel and discover what you can create! This 8-week pottery class introduces teens to the fundamentals of wheel throwing in a relaxed, creative studio environment. Whether you're brand new to pottery or already have some experience, you'll build your skills through hands-on practice and individual guidance.

Students will learn how to prepare and center clay, pull walls, shape forms, and create functional pottery such as bowls, cups, mugs, and vases. As their skills develop, students will learn trimming and finishing techniques, explore surface decoration and glazing, and gain an understanding of the complete process from a lump of clay to a finished ceramic piece. Intermediate and advanced students can explore individual projects, handbuilding techniques, and sculptural forms.

Clay is provided for use in class. Additional clay may be purchased for work created during optional teen open studio time.

No previous pottery experience is required. Returning students are welcome, and repeating sessions is encouraged for skill and confidence to grow over time.

Students will:

• Learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing and clay preparation

• Practice centering, pulling, shaping, and refining forms

• Create functional pottery including bowls, cups, mugs, and vases

• Learn to trim and finish wheel-thrown pieces

• Explore surface decoration and glazing techniques

• Take home their own handmade ceramic pieces

About the instructor 

Kelly Bisogno has taught art to children, teens, and adults for over 20 years. She holds BFA degrees in Sculpture and Art Education from VCU. She was an art teacher at a local high school for over 10 years, teaching AP 2D Design, Studio Art, 3D Design, and Digital Media. Kelly has been the Chesterfield County and Central Region of Virginia High School Art Teacher of the Year, the James River High School Teacher of the Year, and the Virginia Art Teacher of the Year, which is the state’s highest award in art education. Kelly is experienced in teaching various art media to individuals of many ages, skill levels, and interests. She loves helping people connect to their creative potential.
